Trees with continuous growth, normally called sustained growth, continue to produce leaves as long as growing conditions are favorable. It seemed fitting then, that such trees might abort leaves when conditions aren’t favorable. Hmmm. In other words, they “over produce” leaves, then in an effort to conserve limited moisture in harsh, hot times, they rebalance by aborting leaves. Normally the oldest (interior) leaves are the first ones aborted. http://mghc.org/2011/08/19/why-do-some-trees-lose-their-leaves-in-late-summer/
Again no lack of water or sun this year. What about last year ?? Two totally different growing seasons, same results, and both atypical of any other year.
I've lived in Hillbilly NY for most of my life, and have never noticed what appeared to be early leaf drop until last summer.
Last year I noticed it far before the typical fall shedding.
Yesterday my 3 year old grandaughter said, "Look Grandma it's snowing !!" Sure enough I went outside and our willows are dropping leaves like crazy .... with 3 huge ones in our yard, it certainly looked something like snow fall.
Is this normal, or are we experiencing something completely new in the past 2 years ???
Anyone else noticing it ?
