Original Message Bush to Propose Draft for War In Iraq

Washington—In response to Howard Dean and the unpopular support for the war in Iraq, President Bush is planning to propose a reinstatement of the draft. The move comes after Howard Dean pronounced that America can’t win the war in Iraq, comparing it to the Vietnam War.

Time for a draft?

Bush is sending the proposal up before congress breaks for Christmas, and wants immediate action, especially after polls conclusively showed that Americans want out of Iraq. The White House is touting this sudden move as part of its campaign to ramp up support, calling it “the biggest Christmas present the American people will receive this year.”

White House Press Secretary, Scott McClellan, noted that the waning support and the lack of any good news coming out of Iraq have forced their hand. “We just don’t have any choice. If we’d have had at least one good story, we might have been able to keep the wool pulled over the American peoples’ eyes. We didn’t expect Howard Dean to reach these conclusions this quickly either. That has really set us back. So, we’re going to propose implementing the draft. The draft will keep us there as long as we want.”

Dean, the Democratic National Chairman, on Monday told a San Antonio, Texas, radio station that the United States appears to be making the same mistakes it made during the Vietnam War, and the idea that the war in Iraq can be won is “just plain wrong.”

Dean drew parallels between the current administration’s plan to turn security over to the Iraqis and efforts during the Vietnam War to give similar responsibilities to the South Vietnamese, which failed miserably, ending in communist domination of South Vietnam just two years after the troops withdrawal.

“We need to be out of there and take the targets off our troops’ back,” fired Howard Dean. “I wish the president had paid more attention to the history of Iraq before we had gotten in there,” Dean said. “The idea that we’re going to win this war is just plain wrong. Any person that’s not an idiot can see that. Bush, however, is something entirely different.”

In the face of such overwhelming pessimism, the Bush administration has begun aggressively touting the president’s war strategy. President Bush delivered a major address on the war last week at the U.S. Naval Academy and is scheduled to give another Iraq speech Wednesday, focusing on the efforts to rebuild Iraq’s infrastructure and economy through the reinstatement of the draft.

“This proposal is essential,” Vice President Cheney told reporters. “We’ve got to stay and finish the job. We simply have no other choice left in our arsenal. If the media can’t support us, and the American people can’t support us, then we’re going to give them a little taste of the Vietnam War. America will finish the job in Iraq. Period.”

“Bush doesn’t think he’s going to get away with this,” stated Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-MA. “We haven’t spent all this time winning the hearts and minds of the American people so we can stay in Iraq. We’re coming home, and that’s final!”

“Just what does President Bush think he’s doing,” said, Sen. John McCain, D-AZ. “The torture in Iraq, Guantanamo Bay, and all illegal prisons must stop. That’s why we have to bring the troops home.”

“Representative Jack Murtha is right,” noted Sen. John Kerry, D-MA. “We need an immediate withdrawal of troops. This is just the wrong war at the wrong place and at the wrong time. Bring the army of Genghis Khan home for Christmas, Mr. President. We’re only exacerbating the enemy.”

The Vietnam War and its ugly lessons have come full circle. The media, the Democratic Party and Americans have realized that the war in Iraq is a stark reminder of a quagmire effort that leads to a miserable failure. The polls are conclusive: Americans want their sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, and mothers and fathers home for Christmas.

This ugly truth has left President Bush with only the draft to finish the job.
