BARRE, Vt. -
This is what Cumberland Farms on South Main Street in Barre looks like after a surprise visitor crashed through the front door. Slim Jims and DVDs galore litter the floor. It might look like an angry customer stopped by. But actually, it was a wild one.
"They called and said we have a deer at Cumberland Farms. They'd like you to come down and give them some advice," Barre Police Chief Tim Bombardier said.
Bombardier was called to the store Tuesday afternoon. He says in 37 years he's never been to a call like this.
"He probably from the looks of things was in the road, got caught in the road and got spooked and just turned and ran right into the glass doors at Cumberland Farms," Bombardier said.
With no front door, the store temporarily closed.
Store workers were told not to talk about the buck break-in.
"It's tempered glass so when it breaks, it breaks into a million pieces, makes all kind of a mess," explained Tim Bartlow of Portland Glass.
It looks like buck didn't like the store's DVD selection. Bambi was already sold out. After close to 20 minutes of trashing the store looking for an exit, the deer finally escaped with minor cuts and bruises. He got some help from the chief.
"I said you gotta leave," Bombardier said.
"At least it didn't go out a different window-- went out the same way it came in," Bartlow noted.
The wild animal caused several thousand bucks in damages, but didn't leave any dough on his way out the door.
"He escaped without charges," Bombardier said.
