In other words, without the government, there would be no Tesla. Not only that but the concept of electric cars is old technology just like internal combustion cars. There are better technological alternatives out there but no one wants to develop them.
In June 2009 Tesla was approved to receive US$465 million in interest-bearing loans from the United States Department of Energy. The funding, part of an US$8 billion program for advanced vehicle technologies (Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Loan Program), supports engineering and production of the Model S sedan, as well as the development of powertrain technology that Tesla plans to sell to other automakers. The low-interest loans are not related to the "bailout" funds that GM and Chrysler have received, nor are they related to the 2009 economic stimulus package.
You just proved my point that the gov't is funding useless technologies. Why give billions of dollars to a company that is using a technology that has been tried before and failed? The answer is simple: the gov't is run by big oil companies.
So a $500 million loan. That's really not that much. Tesla Motors is not your average EV maker. The motor in the car is actually based on a Nikola Tesla design. That may be why it gets up to 300 miles on a charge and will soon be available with a super charger that will give you 150 miles on a 30 minute charge. The goal of the company is to make these kind of cars better and less expensive than the major automakers. The car is priced at $57k. Not bad for all the technology. Tesla Motors is also owned by Elon Musk. The same guy who owns SpaceX...the company that builds and just launched the first private cargo ship to the ISS at a fraction of the cost of a Government run program. I'm thinking this guy could be a 21st century Howard Hughes.
