[quote:Anonymous Coward 3586871:MV8xOTExMjU2XzMxOTY4MjIyXzI4MTY5NzFC] [quote:Anonymous Coward 1478493:MV8xOTExMjU2XzMxOTY3OTkyXzlGRDRCMTY3] Why do hospitals have to treat people who come to them if they can't pay for it? I am not meaning to be cruel. I'm just trying to figure this out. I assume there must have been some government mandate requiring them to care for people who don't have money? I did notice that the penalty is less than the insurance, so it basically won't cause people to get insurance ... I actually can't believe all the money that is wasted on health care. I hope I am brave enough when I am near the end to forgo excessive treatment so that thousands aren't spent needlessly prolonging my life when I am going to die anyway.
Because Congress passed a law like 30 years ago saying they had to treat everyone. They also allow hospitals and health insurance companies to do things that are not allowed for real businesses, like charging more for other people to pay for the ones who can't pay in the ER. The amount the insurance companies pay for care is not what you see on your bill. In fact in many cases it just happens to be about the same as your deductible. So you pay your insurance premiums and then your hospital bill and insurance make pure profit.
Right now, don't a lot of uninsured low-income people go to hospital emergency rooms and get treated, then the hospitals have to suck up the bills and load them onto other people because they can't pay them? Won't requiring people to have insurance stop this practice?
