AUSTRALIA'S controversial carbon tax kicks in today with tax cuts and a compensation package designed to ease the pain of expected price increases of $9.90 a week for average households.
Billed as Carbon Sunday, today marks the start date of the price on pollution that has divided voters and contributed to a plunge in support for the Gillard Government.
While companies will start passing on costs from today, about 400 polluters won't actually have to pay their first lump sum instalment to the Government until June of next year.
Vowing to dump the unpopular tax as his first act as prime minister if elected, Opposition Leader Tony Abbott said the next election would be a referendum on the tax.
The Liberal Party will today launch a major television advertising campaign accusing Prime Minister Julia Gillard of building a carbon tax based on a lie. The ads feature repetitive ringing cash registers once used by Labor to campaign against former Liberal leader John Hewson's GST to warn the price will continue to climb.
The Liberals have dusted off Labor's killer anti-GST ads featuring the ka-ching of old-fashioned cash registers to hammer home the impact of the carbon tax.
Nearly 20 years ago, the ringing sound of cash registers was deployed in the 1993 election to attack Dr Hewson's proposed GST.
