"Before embracing the spiritual life, a human being is like an ordinary scrap of iron, drab and cold. Only contact with fire, celestial fire, can transform him. Physical fire has the property of rendering iron sufficiently malleable that the blacksmith can give it new forms. In the same way, celestial fire, which is divine love, can plunge man into a spiritual state in which he is freed of his old, sombre, disharmonious form and receives a new, luminous and radiant one. This truth has been known for all time by the true mystics, the true initiates who understood how to find true fire, the fire that burns in the soul and spirit. By plunging themselves in it they arrived at a state of perfect malleability. Then, by means of a work with thought, they pounded and hammered in order to give themselves a new form."
