Clearly they didn't know there's a cut-off switch or they would have hit it. I didn't know there was one until reading this thread. Don't get pissed at folks who obviously wanted to help but didn't know what to do. I'm glad to know now that such a switch exists and will be looking for it whenever I'm at the subway in case of emergency. Thanks for pointing that out.
I've never seen the switch either. You would think it would have huge arrows and multiple languages around it or something to draw attention.
It doesn't. But each platform has one.
They were probably put in back when transit systems could actually afford staff to know where the thing was and push it.
It's there, but no staff are on the platforms. The thing about the 3rd rail is, it is not constantly flowing with juice. It runs in sections; each section is not constantly on. This guy just hit it at the moment it certainly was on. And don't try the "piece of wood" trick, as another poster advised, unless you want your ass knocked back about 20 feet. Wood isn't a great conductor of electricity, but with enough amps, the juice IS going somewhere. Once this guy guy touched that rail, forget it, Let the pro's handle it from there.
Okay, you need to stop talking because you haven't gotten it right yet, power is constantly running through the third rail, what the hell do you think powers the train? The third rail is connected all over NYC, there is NO shut off "button" accessible to the public.
Each and every subway station has at least one power cutoff button. Here in Toronto, we have them at either end of the platforms, DWAs (fixed camera'd areas with direct cc and intercom to station management) every 40 feet or so. You slam the intercom button and yell "cut power, man on tracks" and they're trained to do so. Yes, the subway system is hooked to the grid, but EACH INDIVIDUAL TRACK SECTION can be controlled. What, you don;t think these systems are computerized? They just draw juice and go? NoooOoOooo. Also, OF COURSE they let just anyone hit the emergency shutoff buttons. They have them in the subway cars too, every 10 goddamn feet, and they're bright yellow. If you hit an emergency stop for ANYTHING but an emergency, they fine you and jail you. That's why every other jackass doesn't do it, because every other jackass would be in jail by now.
Go to fucking NYC, we are not talking about Toronto, NYC is chock-o-block full of hoodlums who don't give a shit, they jump turnstyles and run rampant in the subway, stick to what you know.
Yes, NYC is full of hoodlums, who do pull the emergency brake inside the train from time to time. These brakes then have to be reset by the conductor or motorman.
Do you have any clue how metal conducts electricity? How the fuck do they "isolate" one section without it arcing to the next, herp derp!
Each car has an emergency brake; if pulled, the entire train goes BIE (Brakes In Emergency), same as if the train passed a steady red signal.
Oh, here you go. http://gothamist.com/2009/01/14/little-known_switch_on_subway_platf.php UPDATE: MTA spokesperson Charles Seaton writes, "These switches are located in areas that are NOT accessible to subway customers. They are not on the station platform." And they're not accessible to the token booth clerk, either. Seaton declined to elaborate on their exact location, for obvious reasons. Did you get that? NOT accessible to subway customers! Very interesting, time to concede Kraut! You don't know shit!
Each platform has an emergency off switch. May not be well publicized, but they do.
