Volcanologists monitoring Mt Tongariro say they have recorded a series of small earthquakes beneath the mountain.

They began on July 13, declined, then yesterday began increasing again.

GNS Science has accordingly raised the Volcanic Alert Level from 'zero' to 'one', meaning "departure from typical background surface activity". The highest level is five, which would indicate a "hazardous large volcanic eruption in progress".

Mt Tongariro, just south of supervolcano Lake Taupo, was last confirmed active between 1855 and 1897.

Doom coming?? The Taupo supervolcano has erupted 28 times in the last 27 000 years... an eruption every 1000 years or so... the last eruption? 180 CE...
