I also don't see Iran sinking a few US carriers. Do you really think the US navy would just sail their carriers into dangerous waters when they wouldn't even have to to accomplish their mission? Iran does have the capability to attack a carrier, and given enough missiles could probably make a few hits. The navy guys know this so they'll just stay out of range and let their aircraft fly a little farther.

It's the destroyers and littoral ships that will be put in harms way. They'll be the ones sent into the straight along with the anti-mining ships. I expect they'll send in Aegis destroyers.

There are enough land based aircraft within range of Iran that the carriers can sit back and play a bit of a secondary role. Land based aircraft, such as F15s can be used as loitering aircraft, while the carrier based F18s can serve as strike aircraft on whatever targets they can reach. It takes less fuel to fly in and blow and something up, then fly home,than it does to hang around waiting for a target. Also the carrier planes can be used to control the waters surrounding Iran. There are always tankers available, too.
