"The existence of evil is one of the main subjects of inquiry for philosophers, and for thousands of years the faithful of all religions have begged, ‘Lord God, annihilate evil!’ But the Lord scratches his head, smiles even, saying to himself, ‘Poor things! Once they learn to deal with evil, they’ll stop begging me.’ But until that day comes, there will still be much praying!
Of course, we should pray, but what we should be asking is, ‘Lord God, show me how you created the world, how you see things… Give me the insight, the wisdom to understand how I, like you, can be above evil. Teach me how to place it in the service of good, so that I may achieve great things.’ Those who reason this way understand that evil has a positive part to play in the universe. You may say you were taught differently. Possibly so, but what you were taught was incomplete; it is good and true for children, but the reality is quite different. The whole of creation is proof that evil is essential to the cosmic economy."
