So when will Russia cut the cord on the International Space Station as they did with Mir. Along with USA's Billion plus Dollar investment. 13 years in orbit on an original 15 year tour. Russia could cut the cord whenever. They say 2020 but the Russians are in control of its fate and any USA funding cuts could cut the cord asap. A controlled reentry sounds complicated and expensive. We need to start thinking about this. I am assuming the damage caused by an uncontrolled reentry of the ISS were it to hit a populated area would be that of a small nuclear explosion about the size of Hiroshima. Not world changing unless you live at ground Zero. This is not likely to happen but just something to consider.
