Original Message I am an avid hay buyer and help arrange for other farmers to get their loads as well. Last year alfalfa hay averaged $195.00-$225.00 a ton when you buy as big of loads as we deal with. This year, becuse of the drought, very few people even have the hay to sell and what they do have is averaging $275.00-$365.00 a ton. Orchard grass is also sky rocketing. Last year $220.00 was common, this year it's averaging $400.00 a ton or more.
