[quote:Anonymous Coward 23406708:MV8xOTgyNDUxXzMzMzE0NjA4XzJENzNDOEFC] [quote:Erectus:MV8xOTgyNDUxXzMzMzA4MDc4XzExMDlCNEQ2] Both parties do this every election cycle.
It's called Gerrymandering and it's been going on since they created the word gerrymander - in the 1800's.... Now, both parties have sophisticated computer programs to give themselves the best results. After each census, the party in control of the state legislature gets to draw the new electoral districts. The national parties lend their expertise and the result is that most of our members of Congress are in " safe districts.". The only election they have to worry about is the primary, because once you are selected as the Republican or Democratic candidate in a safe district you are guaranteed a victory. That's why are members of Congress have become more radical....They never have to move to the center to win the general election. Every state has one or two districts that are made of the leftovers, they don't fall safely into either party. Larry Sabato has made his entire career calling elections based upon his analysis of the relatively small number of swing districts.... Iowa passed a law that required districts to be geographically compact (basically as close to a square as possible). It was hailed as a model for the rest of the country....Not surprisingly, it never caught on with the politicians.
Original Message
This was in the Washington Post (even a liberal media complaining about this!) the other day and is somewhat a scandal happening in Maryland right now. But you won't see it on MSM.
"The map’s comical gyrations were devised mainly for the purpose of obtaining a seventh Democratic seat from the state’s eight congressional districts. The idea was to weaken the Republican hold on the Sixth Congressional District, held for 20 years by Rep. Roscoe Bartlett; as Democrats intended, he now faces a stiff electoral challenge in the redrawn district."

Please try to keep this pinned. Another example of democracy failing.
