Earthquake drill will start in 12 hours from now, 26 Sep 9.26am LT ..
The New Zealand ShakeOut will be the country's biggest quake drill, with about 1.3 million people pledged to drop, cover and hold at 9.26am tomorrow.
The number of people signed up to participate in the drill is lower in Canterbury than other regions - 83,959 compared with 163,000 in the Wellington region.
About 55,000 people have signed up in Christchurch City, compared with 77,000 people in Wellington City.
About 24,000 teachers and pupils in Christchurch schools will take part in the drill, along with about 10,000 people from the city's health sector and 3000 from local government.
Organised by Civil Defence, ShakeOut will take place at 9.26am, triggered by radio and television stations broadcasting the civil defence ''sting'' sound.
The event was created to help people and organisations get better prepared for major earthquakes, and practice how to protect themselves when they happen - drop to the ground, take cover and hold on until the shaking stops, or if outside, find a clear spot away from potential dangers and wait it out.
