I'm SO encouraged to see someone else notice this verse. Here we see water baptism contrasted with the gospel. We can add John the Baptist's statement as well: Matthew 3:11 I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. And 1 Peter 3:21 ...and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also— not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, Re. the OP's question, this isn't merely about crime and punishment. The deciding factor between heaven and hell is one thing, and the judgment of our actions in this life is another. Heaven is the immediate presence of God, and whoever chooses to spend eternity with God as a citizen of his kingdom will go there on the basis of that choice alone. Conversely, whoever chooses not to spend eternity with God will be granted their wish. Judgment happens after the destination is determined. For those in heaven, it serves the purpose of determining how many of our potential rewards we get to keep. For those in hell, it serves the purpose of determining how much suffering we must endure. And unless we are to believe that the rewards of the righteous are only for the length of their lives, then so also the punishments of the unrighteous would only be for the length of their lives. That is, if punishment is not forever, then neither is blessing.
We are purportedly born in Sin and require baptism for eternal life and the forgiveness of our Sins. If we do not get baptized we spend eternity in the Lake of fire.
It occurred to me, we only live as sinners for a short span
of time. There is a seeming inequity between living a few
years on earth and then spending Eternity in the lake of fire.
Not to question God, but why wouldnt he just make the lake of fire experience equal to the years we lived in the flesh?
Just saying the punishment doesnt seem to fit the crime!
