The big secret is that they condition regular posters to shill without being consciously aware of it.

It happens all the time.  Pay Attention and watch how people unconsciously shill for causes not in their own self interests.

And some of the "paid" shills are actually part of a psychological experiment to see how their personality changes/develops while being a paid shill.

That last part wouldn't surprise me a bit. Do you know in Belgium the Flemish government (the government of the Flemish population of Flanders) has been subsidizing research about "cracking" the personality of prison inmates, criminals etc. so as to make them easier to manipulate and, hence, perhaps, more susceptible of getting back into the fold I suppose. It was even claimed, a few years ago, they had achieved some sort of breakthrough. Anyway it was clearly about controlling people's behavior.
