No, most ladyboys are just hookers. But what I mean is, it is reasonably easy to spot them, specially up close, and even if you have a dozen drinks under the belt.

But inevitably guys hook up with them for the night, some willingly, some not. The 'not' crowd - those who thought they were real women, inevitably are brits more often than not. The brits (not a hard and fast rule) seem to lack the ability to discriminate, thinking they are women.

Ladyboys, especially thais, operate across asia in tier 1 city expat bar hangouts, like Hong Kong, Shanghai, HCMC, KL, Singapore etc. Seen many a brit fall victim first hand, and most expat tales of those who fall victim involve brits.
