Because it is literally going to become a MONSTER when it hits that cold front. What it is now is NOTHING compared to what it will become....so they say...but let's hope they get it wrong. :hiding:
Actually, Sandy is going to merge with a North Easterly AND a cold low from Canada. Three systems into One Monster. Pressure gradient, the difference from the eye to the outer edge of the rain bands, is what makes the hurricane spin. Greater difference of pressure makes a faster/stronger hurricane. The pressure gradient is expected to be very strong. As the North Easter front has a large low pressure area. This low pressure is currently being assimilated by the hurricane. Sort of like having exhaust headers for a hurricane. Most of the time it is the warmer waters that powers the pressure gradient. Which is why people believe hurricanes require warm water. FALSE, hurricanes do not require warm water though it does help A LOT. Hurricanes require a pressure difference to thrive. Sandy is going to have a tremendous pressure difference. Then dump all of this tropical moisture into a cold front. That cold air will condense all that moisture into rain. Heavy rain, not normal rain. Wilma turned into a CAT5 in 16 hours from a TS. If the pressure gradient is strong enough, which it looks to be soon, Sandy will spin up into a CAT-5. MARK MY WORDS.....SANDY WILL TURN INTO A CAT-5
Some Americans may have to think twice about going trick-or-treating this year. A massive storm is expected to hit the East Coast during the days leading up to Halloween, which meteorologists anticipate will cost at least $1 billion in damages.
The “Frankenstorm” may bring high winds, heavy rain, extreme tides and even snow to some states. The storm will evolve from a collision between Hurricane Sandy, which has already swept through Haiti and Cuba and is now heading north, and a winter storm coming from the west. Government forecasters say there is a 90 percent chance that the hurricane will make landfall on the East Coast.
The two weather systems are predicted to collide in New York or New Jersey Tuesday morning, bringing those states about 5 inches of rain and winds close to 40 mph. Forecasters say it could be the worst US storm in 100 years. Chuck Watso, director of research and development at Kinetic Analysis Corp., announced Thursday that it may cost more than $5 billion in damages.
