Original Message VOLUNTEERS and marine experts are trying to save a whale beached off the coast of Tasmania, a day after a mass stranding on New Year Island where more than 80 dolphins and whales died.
For a third successive day, locals have discovered distressed animals beached on the islands northwest of Tasmania.
On Friday, 13 dolphins were found beached at Quarantine Bay on King Island, with eight able to be saved.
But the find was dwarfed on Saturday when 60 pilot whales and 20 bottlenose dolphins were found on nearby New Year Island.
