Your ancestors would beg to differ. You do realize the Germans are the people that named us Devil Dogs. They named us this since they had never seen men fight as hard as the Marines. Look up the battle of Belleau Wood for a good history lesson! Semper Fi!
Unfortunately, I had to do some field exercise as an NCO, and was assigned a group of marines, allegedly infantry. When it came to the land navigation exercises, and I was telling them to show me re-section and intersection to find their position on the map, they just gave me that deer in the headlight look. (They had no idea what I meant) Then I was supervising a mortar crew, (81mm and 4.2 inch) and they had no idea what to do when it came to cutting charges. I was not impressed with them. They did a lot of oooh rahhing and all that like monkeys, but their infantry skills were sorely lacking. Just how it was.I needed a stiff drink after dealing with them all day. It was like Special education.
I can't speak for infantry, I was a Artillery Radar Operator and everyone on in my section was very well trained and knew exactly what needed to be done. These guys that were allegedly infantry didn't happen to be reservists did they? It's been ten years since I got out but, when I was in, all the active duty guys were good to go and well trained. They knew their duties inside and out. The reservists on the other hand acted exactly as you stated above...
Ever since GPS started coming on line I would bet as far map skills go. After I came off of the trail I had to reteach people how to land nav with a map and compass. I'm with ya brother
Yeah today with GPS and shit, it's likely wayyy different. The mortar shit is computerized I heard, etc. My story was long before this high tech stuff started. And today, I'd bet they rely on the high tech stuff for land nav, fire direction center, etc. Problem is, that could all go away while in combat, and one has to know how to do land nav, at night, with a compass and so on. Hi tech is no substitue for old fashioned soldiering.
Is it wrong of me to think that 3 pull ups is about 7 pull ups short of being a challenge? I mean, these guys are marines, bull balls eating marines!
