Well, pretty close to a total disaster for the Republicans. Losing the presidency wasn't something completely unexpected due to the vagaries of an Electorate, where anything could happen (depending on which state barely breaks which way) but to not take over more Senate seats is something of a disaster. Clearly the Republicans are out of touch. Some solace in maintaining, possibly gaining a few seats in the House.
So why did the Republicans lose? Its because of Ron Paul. He may not have been the Republican nominee, but he is still highly influential in the Republican party. Unfortunately Republicans have been too influenced by him. Ron Paul, and now the Republicans, relies too much on intellect and Reason and arguing about policies, going into "esoteric" details and analysis of budgets, law, history, taxes, banking, foreign policy, etc.,
Intellect and reason NEVER EVER appealed to most American voters. You have to rely on fear mongering, demonizing, lies, half truth and emotions to win elections, and tantalizing promises of Obama phones, which the Democrats pulled off perfectly this election. The Republicans were too intellectually pristine, they needed to hit below the belt like the Democrats.
Sigh, Karl Rove realized this. Got Bush II elected, Rove loved Bush because he seemed like some good ol' boy the American public can emotionally identify with. Bush beat that robot Gore, Bush beat the robot Kerry. Soaring rhetoric teleprompter Obama beat befuddled old McCain and robot Romney. Clinton beat befuddled old Dole and Bush I. Heck, Bush I was even more charismatic then Dukakis, thats says something about Dukakis's utter lack of charisma. See how it goes?
Again, the Republicans have become to over intellectualized, esoteric, and caught up in financial minutiae thanks to Ron Paul. Sorry, love the guy, wish every politician was like him, but it doesn't work with the voters.
