[quote:Waterbug:MV8yMDQzNjk1XzM0MzQ4MzM3XzkwQTgwRDQz] [quote:Maguyver:MV8yMDQzNjk1XzM0MzQ4MjI4XzE4Q0U0QkE0] To all the sun-tards (and I am one...), the possibility of a flair and CME wrecking havoc on earth as mentioned in the article is certainly possible. However, very very unlikely. The distance scale is huge and the likelyhood of a direct shot of that intensity ain't much. Think of it this way: the earth is the size of a pingpong ball; about an inch in diameter; the sun would be 11,736 inches away. The sun can blow out in any direction and we'd need one earth directed large enough (>X-60?) not to dissipate over that distance. So, again, possible, but not probable. Would make for some stunning auroras seen in the clear skys since the light polution will be non-existant.. [/quote] You are mistaken. The magnetosphere is very weak. A cme following a cme, as happened with the carrington event, is a definite possibility. The discharge of the sun is not so predictable nor well-understood.. as much as you would like to think it so.
