One detail that come out in Petraeus Scandal - Petraeus paid a secret trip to Libya on October 31st.
October 31st was an extraordinary day in Libya. Libyan tweeters (who are closely associated with interim Libyan Gov't) were tweeting about a Coup in Tripoli...A member of the Libyan Parliament went on TV & said parliament had been stormed...Americans closely associated with the revolution were tweeting that the new Prime Minister was "out". Libyan TV stopped providing coverage and just played music...
Libyan tweeters contacted the international media (including JomanaCNN - CNN's Middle East producer) but NOTHING was reported in Western Media.
The next day, the first western media reports appeared. They reported that Islamist militias stormed & occupied the GNC (Libya's parliament). They suggested Parliament was not in session - it had been in session, but it was "suspended" due to the "protests." The Western media also reported that journalists were being beat up...
This stand-off or potential coup lasted for 2 days. The militias would not leave unless the entire government resigned or they were put in charge of all government ministries with a security function. In other words, they demanded that the new gov't leave now or put them in charge of all the guns (and thus all the power)..
Then, for some unexplained reason the protestors withdrew on November 2nd...Did Petraeus go to Libya to get the Islamists to back off?
Note - Official story was that he went to determine how compromised US was after storming of Benghazi CIA station...(fact-finding mission)
But Gov't buildings were occupied during his trip. Libya's PM & President made a big show of being seen (under heavy security) in public places. Why/How would you meet w/ Libyan officials about an event that happened 2 months ago (Benghazi attack) - when they are making "proof of life" appearances...
If Petraeus was able to make the Islamists "stand down," doesn't that prove once and for all that the US controls the Libyan Islamists? The same guys who are still fighting in Syria...
Note - Petraeus's fix may have been temporary. On 11/20/2012, Benghazi's security chief was assassinated and there are reports of clashes involving Islamist militias.
I'll repost tweets & articles about coup/militia stand-off that was going on during Petraeus' trip to Libya..
