Is it worth reading? Too girly (I'm a man)? Anyone? Bueler?
I read that as a teenager, its a whole series. There is a movie too. Its about a mother and her wealthy father is dying but they are not on good terms with each other. i cant remember why. Anyway, also I dont think he knows she has kids or something. She wants in his good graces to get his money, so she moves in with her mother and father, and then she locks her kids in the attic and leaves them there. she comes up to see them once a day, then eventually forgets to come up at all. The grandma knows about the kids, and she is evil and she tries to poison her grandchildren and kill them. so the kids are trapped, and basically i think its a teenage girl and boy and two little kids. the littlest boy dies, and the teenage girl and boy get it on with each other - i think there was some incest thing going on but i cant remember, and then i think there was a little girl too who was really sick. Anyway, they figure out how to break out of the attic and ......... if you want to read it check it out.
Yikes! You really should have posted a spoiler alert for that. More SPOILERS below. The kids were locked in the attic, because they were the product of an incestuous relationship. When the kids' father died, their destitute mother went crawling back to her fabulously wealthy parents for financial assistance. The kids' rich grandparents were stern, religious types who greatly disapproved of their daughter's incestuous relationship and had disinherited her. The grandmother told her daughter that the grandfather might be able to forgive her and make her an heiress again, but only if he could be led to believe that the daughter's incestuous relationship had produced no children. The grandchildren were a dealbreaker. The mother hid her children in the spacious attic of the grandparents' mansion, thinking it would only be for a little while. However, as it turned out, granddaddy was very slow to forgive. The kids, who had previously lived a very happy, normal life prior to their father's death, wound up being locked in the attic for years with their mother's visits becoming less and less frequent. However, they still received visits from their harsh and abusive grandmother, who viewed them as abominations. End of SPOILERS. OP, the book is quite disturbing and twisted, but it's impossible to stop reading once you've started. It's an excellent story, though it treads heavily into taboo territory. I only read "Flowers in the Attic", BTW. I was unable to finish the sequel, because it just became too dark for me to handle.
