Original Message Mt Tonagriro has erupted.

GeoNet reports the mountain erupted at 1:30pm today.

First images from the scene show a massive plume of ash bellowing into the air above the crater.

GNS Science last Friday stated that temperatures were rising hundreds of metres beneath the volcano, and there was an increased chance of an eruption.
They indicated that a vent was partially blocked, leading to increased pressure.
