Why are people so shallow, materialistic and cruel to one another?

[quote:RoxykinsIII:MV8yMDY5MjEyXzM0ODIxNzM4XzFGQjk5MTJG] I think this seems to be very common in the US. I have noticed a distinct difference in the way my US cousins act compared to my cousins in Italy. My son broke his leg and I posted a picture on facebook. Not one single person in my family that lives in the US called. Every cousin in Italy either called or emailed me within the next 24 hours, plus my Uncles & Aunts all called my father when they found out from their children. Anyone else notice anything similar? Seriously, it's like they are so judgmental of one another. And most of them that are materialistic are greedy for completely stupid things. They place value in the wrong places and items even. They're so focused on being hip and trendy that they lose focus on what's really important. Things like spending time with loved ones and people who you care about. Things like taking the time to gain a little wisdom every once in a while. And most importantly taking the time and energy into caring! Tell me what you think. Am I right or wrong?
