At the meeting of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) in San Francisco at December 3, 2012, Paul Mahaffy, scientist of NASA, announced that Martian water, samples of which were extracted from the Martian soil by rover Curiosity- is much "heavier" than Earth's water, since the water on Mars contains much more deuterium, a heavy isotope of hydrogen. According to Paul Mahaffy, Martian water has almost 5 times more deuterium, than in the Earth's oceans, so the water is not potable, as its use can cause a severe poisoning.
