Issachar was the ninth son of Jacob and the fifth son of Leah. Both of these numbers are important, for nine is the number of strength and five the number of grace. Thus together it refers to the strength of grace which is manifested in the life of Issachar and the Issacharites.
In Genesis 30:14-18, Reuben, the eldest son of Jacob and Leah , finds mandrakes in the field. Mandrake in Hebrew is םיאדוד , means “love plant,” which was thought to help barren women to conceive a child. Mandrakes are really a narcotic plant which the ancients esteemed to be closely connected with love and a bringer of love.
Rachel, Jacob's second wife, the sister of Leah, is desirous of the mandrakes and she barters with her sister for them. The trade offered by Rachel is for Leah to spend the next night in Jacob's bed. Soon after this Leah, who previously had had four sons but had ceased to become pregnant for a long while then became pregnant once more and gave birth to a son, Issachar. With this understanding of mandrakes, we see Issachar was bought or hired for love, his name meaning “reward” or “hire.”
Therefore Issacharites are known for their vulnerability to love. They can be easily hired for human love, or on the other hand, they become loyal servants for hire

Returning to the scripture of Jacob’s prophecy about Issachar, there is nothing derogatory about his being likened unto a strong ass. An ass was a beast of burden, and in this case it means a male ass, one that is especially strong and able to bear the load. Issachars are always burden bearers of one sort or another, and they can never escape the nature that is in them to bear a load almost too great for them. God has granted them such a nature, and thank God for them.

It says of Issachar that he couches down between two burdens, and the word “couching” literally means “bend the legs” or taking the position of an animal with legs bent under it. This in itself gives us the cue to Issachar’s position in Israel represented in the figure of a man.
Issachar is in the legs; legs that are not only swift to run and do, but legs that also know how to stoop, bend, couch down in a resting position. Issacharites are marked by both their burden bearing and by their ability to stop and rest.
It is interesting to note that Issachar couches down between two burdens. This particular Hebrew word “burden” is used only twice in the whole Old and New Testaments. It is here translated as burdens, but In Judges 5:16 as “sheepfolds.” So, what are these two sheepfolds? It might be said that Judah is one and Israel is the other in view of the fact that the kingdom was divided into two Kingdoms: the Kingdom of Judah and the Kingdom of Israel.
This is true, and Issachar surely is a burden bearer between the two longing for the time when both Kingdoms are joined into one. But, more than that, let us look at Zech. 11:4-ll for another bit of information. There you will see pictured two flocks: the flock of slaughter and the poor of the flock. You might say this is all one flock, and in a sense it is, and yet these sheep find themselves in two
different sheepfolds.

The poor of the flock refers to the remnant of Israel that listen and hear the Word of the Lord and act accordingly. The flock of the slaughter refers to Israel, too, but that portion of Israel which is going to come under judgment and cleansing during the days of great testing and trouble that are coming upon the whole earth.
The poor of the flock are overcoming now though considered as nothing and as dung by others, but the flock of slaughter will overcome during the horribly dark days that will try the whole earth.
The rest of Jacob’s prophecy concerning Issachar fits with what we already said, “He saw that rest was good, and the land that it was pleasant; and bowed his shoulder to bear, and became a servant unto tribute.” Issachar has a God-given vision of the rest God has promised us and the land, or inheritance, that is to be ours, but also knows there is a price to be paid in obtaining such. Therefore, he is not compelled to bow his shoulder to the load , but gladly does it, and even becomes a servant unto tribute or burden.
He gives himself as a love slave, which he is, and nothing is considered too great a load in view of what God will bring him into in the days ahead. Issacharites are men and women of vision, but also very realistic in realizing that vision will only become reality by being love slaves unto the Lord Himself. They are also servants TO men, but not OF men, for the Lord’s sake, but they are indeed servants OF Christ.
And these are the numbers of the bands that were ready armed to the war, and came to David to Hebron, to turn the kingdom of Saul to him, according to the word of the Lord …. And of the children of Issachar, which were men that had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do: the heads of them were two hundred: and all their brethren were at their commandment. (I Chron. 12:23-32)

Will you especially note that the Issacharites who were used to help establish the kingdom to David and make him king thereof; they were men who had understanding of the times. The same holds true today. I have found a real cry in my own heart for God to bring forth His Issacharites that they might be able to show us the meaning of God’s times and seasons. We have been given many things concerning times, but how many of us have any understanding regarding the times of God that they in turn might relay to Israel what Israel should do at such times.
so bear the burden of times and seasons in your heart and shall soon reveal it to the rest of us who long to know!
