Disparity means potential, in other words, China’s biggest potential for development in the coming decades lies in the process of urbanization, he added. […] A UN report, titled Urban and Rural Areas 2011, predicted that nearly 70 percent of the population will live in urban areas by 2035. Over the next two decades China will build 20,000 to 50,000 new skyscrapers and more than 170 cities will require mass transit systems by 2025." i want to see this UN report. this is not some "prediction" this is a man made effort to rid of all things rural there. wtf.
China really does have a scale issue with their "family farms". They aren't 100 acres, they're 1/10 of an acre. Major inefficiency. They definitely move people when those people are in the way of some project, like road construction. And it's not something you can fight. They try to provide equivalent or better housing. Sometimes the house is better but the location is worse, because they're moving people off of valuable central real estate. But sometimes people play games to take advantage of this. I know of one village (in China, which I'm talking about) where everyone has expanded their houses, they are about 2000 square feet each. Sure it's nice living in such a large space, but the real reason is that they expected to be relocated and the compensation would depend on the size of the house. Well the plans changed and they weren't relocated, and now they all have their large houses. :)
China's biggest construction firms will spend £2.2bn to flatten 700 mountains levelling the area Lanzhou, allowing developers to build a new metropolis
The project will be China's fifth "state-level development zone" and the first in the country's rapidly developing interior. Others: Shanghai's Pudong and Tianjin's Binhai,
home to an unfinished, 120-building replica of Manhattan.
Liu Fuyuan, former high-level official at the country's National Development and Reform Commission, said project was unsuitable because Lanzhou is listed as among China's most water-scarce municipalities. "The most important thing is to gather people in places where there is water,"
so, ok, let bulldoze 700 mountains where there is no water.

China will flatten 700 mountains to make way for a new desert metropolis in what is believed to be one of the biggest mountain moving projects in the country's history.
Last year the World Health Organisation named Lanzhou one of China's most polluted cities with the worst air pollution and a shortage of water.
