[quote:Anonymous Coward 1110734:MV8yMDc3MTY3XzM0OTY5ODI2X0NFNEI3NjJG] I'm a firm believer in taking some parafin and melting it into seasoned sawdust. Once it hardens, slice that into wafers. Then save these in an altoid tin or similar, and then in a pinch, they easily light. Yes, it's cheating. Wait until you try to start a fire when wet and cold. In an emergency situation, say a collapse, you want to be able to start a fire FAST. Most likely a Dakota Hole fire to minimize anyone seeing it. Mucking around and trying to get something started at the end of the day when exhausted from hiking a long way, well that's nonsense. Even the Native Americans carried glowing embers in special kits to quickly start fires. [/quote]

Just showing how you can very easily start a fire with cotton balls.
If you pre-prepare one with petroleum jelly flint and (magnesium) striker ignition is childsplay.
Trying to do this without petroleum jelly means it's more difficult to raise the flashpoint of the cotton wool ball.
Carrying a bag of these prepped cotton wool balls means you'll not have a nightmare of trying to start a fire with wet tinder, bark etc.
I cannot tell you how handy this is if there is rainfall, wet conditions etc.
I have bags of these all over my Catche's etc.
