[quote:Anonymous Coward 29807399:MV8yMDc5NDI0XzM1MDIwNjA4XzIxMDAxNEI3] Well, given that they have been handing out drilling licences around here to drill in our ancient woods for the oil under the downs I am not surprised this has got the go ahead.. Married to the idea (MOU) of getting geothermal power from Iceland it seems someone wants to ensure Britain maintains a sort of energy independence and given the recent piddling in the Euros pond I am not surprised. Edward Davey, the Energy Secretary, this morning lifted a ban on the drilling for shale gas, which was put in place after the UK's first project near Lancashire caused tremors last year. His decision will allow companies to explore for the new energy source across swathes of countryside in the south, north-west and north-east of England.
The first company to drill for Britain's shale gas – Cuadrilla Resources – will now be able to resume its operations near Blackpool, with new controls guarding against the risk of mini earthquakes.
