Researchers found that people who played a violent video game for three consecutive days showed increases in aggressive behavior and hostile expectations each day they played. Meanwhile, those who played nonviolent games showed no meaningful changes in aggression or hostile expectations over that period. “Playing video games could be compared to smoking cigarettes. A single cigarette won’t cause lung cancer, but smoking over weeks or months or years greatly increases the risk. In the same way, repeated exposure to violent video games may have a cumulative effect on aggression.” Read more here: http://researchnews.osu.edu/archive/violgametime.htm
:bsflag:
I had a feeling I was going to see that flag after posting the article--:chuckle:
This is such a poor study in so many ways. Not to even mention the intentions and expectations of both the researcher's and the participants corrupt any limited data sets such as these. These researchers/students were looking for effects of aggression. Wow, they found it. Did they see how it correlates to a rise comradery? What about the effects of their winning percentages? I'm not sure about you but I get grumpy when I lose. These 70 students were probably walk ups that is how these kind of trials go, but I don't like to play some games, thus am not good at some games, thus lose and unhappy. Did they play each other in the video games? If so, it is reasonable for them to think those are the same unknown players in the test game player later. What is the correlation of losing in either game to aggression?
Violent video games and a "culture of violence" found in the media could be contributing factors to mass shootings, Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper said Sunday.
"There might well be some direct connection between people who have some mental instability and when they go over the edge - they transport themselves, they become part of one of those video games," Hickenlooper said on CNN's "State of the Union." "Perhaps that's why all these assault weapons are used."
The Democratic governor argued that some gun regulations need to be tweaked but said more immediate changes can take place by targeting mental health.
