Why does the only source of info in news stories come from "an unnamed source who is not permitted to speak to the media"?

You read and hear this time and time again.
Do you really believe they were not "allowed" to release information?
There is no way to go back and get follow up questions or, if the info turns out to be untrue (a lie), ask the person why he/she told a lie!?
Why does MSM routinely publish this type of unattributed information about a major news story, when there is no way to verify the information.
Who told the "anonymous" source what to say and to who?
If an official gave out information to the press, unauthorized, an internal investigation would easily pin-point the source, AND HE OR SHE WOULD BE FIRED ON THE SPOT!!
Why does it take days, weeks, or months for idiots like Lt. Vance dodging questions, giving non-answers, ducking questions asked, and answering questions unasked.
I took journalism in college a long time ago...back then, this type of "source" would never be printed in a legitimate newspaper or tv news.
Back then we called it...an unfounded RUMOR!
The motto was always: Consider the source!
