If it is the Government, then you'll have to factor in the changes in France, given that it was the French King who supported you in your war of independence, a king that was then kicked out for being not equally unpleasant.

The French went Republic route after you did.. you led they followed, surprisingly I have come across quite a few, I was going to say Americans, but reality is people of all nations seem to think you guys followed the French.. you led by example, the French followed and well done you :)

If you consider your founding documents as important ideologically then it would almost have to be Britain, the Virginian Declaration of Rights was based on the English Declaration of Rights.. but then those rights where to equally deal with unpleasant rulers, and the disarming of a section of English society, i.e the Anglicans at the hands of the Catholics (a great example of a document attempting to deal with re-arming a population after being disarmed)

So the Virginian Declaration of Rights went on to influence the US Declaration of Rights and the French Declaration of the Rights of the Man and the Citizen. Well done on that one :)

Amusingly while the French King Supported the American Revolution the British supported the French Revolution, so could you really call those actions benevolent? of self interest to kick an opponent in the nuts? does that make them a great American ally, or where you simply a vested interest?

I find the topic very interesting, and no I do not consider Britain a great ally of America, nor do I consider America a great ally of Britain.. a relationship based solely around self interest of both sides. I am sure there are others who really have been great allies of America.

For Britain I think we do have a few great allies, the Portuguese, Maltese and a few other nations spring to mind and would have to share the title as Britains BFF, all have done so much over such a long period of time.

and then you have the sons and daughters of Britain who have stood by our side through thick and thin, regardless of how shitty our government has treated them.. Now that is friendship..

I think you are making assumptions if you think I think that way about America, most of my family are American, and I have spent the last 30 years working with Americans, note not working for them or them working for me, but rather with... I am a collaborative person and only interested in equal relationships.

I did notice you comment in another thread about how you despise the British, which is fine, but to assume everyone looks down on America equals all those who see Americans as fat.

Military Ally

Overall, Hitorical and current.

My vote for Americas greatest ally in history would go to the French. If it was not for them the war would have been lost for Independence. The French even gave us the Statue of Liberty.

Military wise they are at the least in 3rd place, Behind the UK and perhaps Israel.

But overall, the French have always been a great boon to us Americans.
