New computers come with widescreen monitors, usually in a ratio of 16:9 or thereabouts. These are not suited for working with text, reading webpages, documents, etc. 4:3 (the square shaped screens) ratio monitors are well suited for these tasks. They are an adaptation of TVs, which are designed for passive consumption of media, such as reality shows, movies, etc. I recently switched back to an old 4:3 ratio LCD monitor, and it is MUCH better for browsing, reading text, etc. Computer usage is much better with a 4:3 monitor.
I consider widescreens an attempt to dissuade people from working with text, reading, writing, etc. Widescreens are for passive media consumption, which numbs the brain.
