Original Message Wind gusts and precipitation brought down power lines and left thousands without power throughout Illinois in the season's first winter storm.

More than 30,000 people are without power in northern Illinois as of 8 p.m., according to Arlana Johnson, a spokeswoman for Commonwealth Edison.

The western suburbs were the hardest hit, with more than 27,000 people without power, Johnson said.

ComEd prepared for power outages and significant damage to its system, putting out additional crews and equipment and by asking other utilities to be at the ready to assist.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for the area until 3 a.m. Friday.
