Original Message Triboluminescence and/or Fractoluminescence are optical phenomenon, forms of mechanoluminescence in which light is generated through the rubbing (tribo) or breaking (fracto) of chemical bonds in a material when it is pulled apart, ripped, scratched, crushed, or rubbed.

Unlike piezoluminescence, the material emits light when it is broken, not deformed.

This effect is not fully understood by our current conceptual models of science but it is thought that upon fracture of asymmetrical materials, there is a separation and reunification of electrical charge. When the charges recombine the electric discharge ionizes the surrounding air and causes a flash of light.

The observation of Triboluminescence in a mercury filled barometer led to the discovery of the Barometric light which while investigating researchers discovered that static electricity could cause low-pressure air to glow, which revealed the possibility of electric lightening!!!

so cool!
