Are you an idiot? I'm assuming you're probably still in school with no experience in the field of work, pardon my ignorance. A months notice is minimum for a general shift bar tending, it helps both the staff and managers know what's going on and when. Any shifts given or taken within the month you can phone the staff member up and inform them or ask them to come in, if they're free and willing, well you get an extra shift and nights pay, which is good. If you can't you tell them, and nothing is said about it. 
Now, giving holiday shifts, you don't just give the staff member the shift, you generally tend to ask them first. What if I had booked for me and my girlfriend to stay in a hotel down London for £80, club tickets for £30 and a taxi from said club to hotel for £20, altogether that gives me £130 spent at the beginning of December due to having to book in advance incase of hotel rooms or club tickets running out due to high sales. Now, if I had been given this shift at the end of November, I wouldn't have this problem, because I KNOW I'M WORKING. If he gives me the shift a week before, I'm in a bit of a pickle, aren't I? £130 spent, and I go to work to earn £60.. You do the Math.

Original Message Seriously, I'm being made to work on New Years Eve, the place I work for is pathetic. They give me a weeks notice to let me know I'm working, not letting me know in advance incase I wanted to make plans. I worked all Christmas day, all boxing day and am being forced to work all of New Years Eve.
Its only a part time bartending job, I appreciate I have a job in such hard times, but I really just want to spend New Years with my girlfriend and friends, I've asked my manager for it off, and he says he'd do his best, but it doesn't look like I'm getting off. I even suggested coming in as soon as the bar opens until about 6pm, and leaving early. I'm going into work tonight and need to tell him I won't work, any suggestions on how to do it?
