Try applying generous amount of 70 percent DMSO (Jacobs or Nature's Gift brand) applied with OTC camphor/menthol to chest and throat.  After applying don't wear or cover the area with anything but natural cotton fiber.

Gave the above to kid who woke at 4 AM complaining of persistent cough, sore throat and general crappiness.  Also gave her turmeric, garlic and Vit D3 and ibuprofen.

She was fine enough in the morning to go to school and has been fine since.

Didn't have any barbed wire....
