Nuclear Event in Australia on Tuesday, 08 January, 2013 at 04:05 (04:05 AM) UTC. Description A fire which broke out at a nuclear research facility in Sydney's south this morning has been extinguished. The alarm was raised at Lucas Heights nuclear plant after a smoke was reported coming from the back of the facility, which contains two nuclear reactors. Operators now say the fire has been extinguished the reactors made safe. Fire & Rescue NSW Superintendent Tom Cooper said the call from the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) came at 10.36am local time (12.36pm NZT). He told AAP the fire was in an electrical substation at the rear of the facility. A statement from ANSTO said there were reports of smoke, before their on-site fire crews extinguished a fire in the electrical wiring. "It is not believed that this is related to the current weather conditions," the statement said. "The OPAL reactor is shut down and is safe. The issue was dealt with within around one hour, no injuries have been reported, and there is no ongoing issue at the site." ANSTO said it called Fire and Rescue NSW, and there would be an investigation into the cause of the blaze. The Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency has been notified.
