SALT LAKE CITY — Many northern Utah residents are wondering what caused a loud boom that shook their windows Tuesday night.

The source of the sonic booms, as they're being described, remains unknown. But seismologists are suggesting they could have come from far away, perpetuated by the inversion.

Emergency dispatchers and KSL received dozens of calls about the noises, with people saying their windows shook. Others said it felt like an earthquake.

The state seismologist confirmed there were two sonic booms around 9 p.m.
