Re: I am a commercial ship captain. Ask me a question and i might answer it. where do we apply? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 31152703 Go to your nearest coast guard station and acquire the two credentials you'll need. An MMC (Merchant Mariner Credential) and a TWIC ( Transportation Workers ID Card). Take a drug test. Get FBI background check. Get job. Takes two weeks. Easy process.
Re: I am a commercial ship captain. Ask me a question and i might answer it. It is easy to get into. Great jobs especially for a single guy. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 31930936 What is the exact process? I also don't know how to swim... Quoting: Ohio Leopard Call the NMC (national Maritime Center) for any detailed questions. Very helpful people. Visit your nearest Coast Guard station to obtain your MMC. Fill out the papers. They'll send you for a drug test. Pay them the $120 dollars and you'll receive a credential in the mail that looks like a passport. Before you go to the CG though you go online to the TWIC website. Just google it. Set up an appointment to obtain your TWIC. Follow their instructions. 1. Acquire the TWIC 2. Acquire your MMC via the Coast Guard. 3. Apply for a job There are three ways to apply for a job. 1. Go to a union 2. Go to a crew hiring agency 3. Apply directly to the company of your choice via their website
Re: I am a commercial ship captain. Ask me a question and i might answer it. I want a job. How many hours do you work a week? Shifts? Days on and off? Time on land vs on water? Pay? Thx. Quoting: Dr. Super Bowl Dave Commercial sailors are paid a day rate. Typically $250 to $300 per day based on a 12 hour day. After that you can retire to your room. This is a starting position. As you acquire experience you can move to other departments. Deck, engine room, or galley. Typically you work 30 days on and get 30 days at home. Every company is different though. Deep sea you might be gone 60 days or more. In the gulf you can work 2 weeks on 2 weeks off. It varies widely. If you are in port and you are not on watch you are free to go into town. But many companies are zero tolerance drug and alcohol so if you come back wasted you'll get fired. There are exceptions though and many crew have been known to have a sip or two before turning in.
