They spend their careers learning about not just war, but the larger strategic implications of war. You can win and still lose. You can lose and still win. Obama and his fairy winged advisors need to STFU and listen to the generals. That way we might not end up a third world country. An example is how the brass have been trying to tell the politicians for years that overspending will cripple us strategically, but nobody will listen to them.
YEP ... Military men are Master Strategists !! *That is why after 10 years there we are STILL fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan ... daily. *That is why the Taliban are probably going to take back control of Afghanistan within 18 months after we leave. *That is why Iraq is at the ragged edge of a Civil War 9 years after we invaded the place in order to "free them" from a Dictator, and we killed more Iraqi's (who had nothing to do with 9/11 - but the Saudi's who did remained uninvaded) than their "brutal" Dictator did. (oh ... and WMD's in Iraq, the lack of finding any after we turned over every rock in the country showed how UNintelligent our "Intelligent" services really are) YEP ... our Military men ARE Master Strategists ... NOT. Sheesh ... Our Military men may know how to fight a big Conventional War, but for a war that involves unconventional means and which involves a "minds" (ie: political) component they didn't seem to learn anything from 1965 onward, even after loss after loss. (Vietnam, Cambodia, Lebanon, Somalia, and now Afghanistan and Iraq)
It now appears likely that Gen. Mattis, a Marine Corps legend, will leave his post as head of America’s most important combatant command in March, several months earlier than planned. Ricks continues:
“Why the hurry? Pentagon insiders say that he rubbed civilian officials the wrong way — not because he went all “mad dog,” which is his public image, and the view at the White House, but rather because he pushed the civilians so hard on considering the second- and third-order consequences of military action against Iran. Some of those questions apparently were uncomfortable. Like, what do you do with Iran once the nuclear issue is resolved and it remains a foe? What do you do if Iran then develops conventional capabilities that could make it hazardous for U.S. Navy ships to operate in the Persian Gulf? He kept saying, “And then what?

This is yet another top General let go by Obama & company: First it was Gen. David McKiernan in 2009 -- the first time a war time commander had been removed since the Truman era. Now this latest one is number 5 of top leaders.
It is almost as if you would think that if the top Brass does not agree with Obama they end up fired or have their name dragged through the mud. I must need coffee though and haven't seen the big picture, Obama wouldn't do something so emperor like and put the nation in the hands of incompetent people ...
