Not speaking about what actually came out of the trunk myself, but the OP makes an incredibly important point that has been WAY UNDER-DISCUSSED and scrutinized, even here.

The folks were allowed to wonder around in circles in the fire station parking lot a few yards away, beginning (in the shadow analysis) before the shots even ceased.  NO WAY would that ever have been permitted at a real crime scene...EVER!!!
