[quote:wisc_natureboy:MV8yMTI5MTM1XzM1OTMwMTM5X0U5QkQ2Rjc0] [quote:Anonymous Coward 28707810:MV8yMTI5MTM1XzM1OTMwMDcxXzgyQzg0ODc1] Car insurance can be high as well as taxes but on the plus side crime is relatively low throughout the country. People can be kind of cranky though, depending on where you go. I will tell you honestly the worst part about Canada for me personally ( and maybe it is because of where I live, Toronto), is the fact that so much has changed here in the last few decades. Constant development and expansion in the GTA makes the city of my youth almost unrecognizable. We also have a lot of left wingers here in Toronto, the rabid type too, who have assisted in the condofication and dismantling of this once great city. Another thing that tends to bug me is the influx of immigrants, and by immigrants I mean non assimilating types who have taken over entire quadrants of this city. Goes back to the city of my youth being unrecognizable. I have nothing against immigrants per se, but I have a problem with the way that modern ones( Mostly south asians, middle eastern and ex soviets and other assorted refugees) have no love for the country, whine about it, demand change and use the system. They are unlike my parents generation who worked their butts off to build a country and a home and were appreciative of the opportunity they got. They wouldn't dare make waves or file BS lawsuits like others and they sure as heck didnt make bones about religion. They would also rather starve and die than rely on the system. Oh yeah, there is also a modern day sodom and gomorrah in Toronto, namely the gay parade that people actually bring their kids too! That kind of disappoints me. We are also moving to a cookie cutter type of retail operation here, which annoys me.We underwent a major de industrialization similar to other manufacturing hubs like Detroit, Buffalo and Pittsburgh. Our saving grace is that 1/3 of the population of the country lives within 100km of the city, so other businesses have popped up to replace them, and we have a lot of manufacturuers who moved to the outskirts.Seems like every city is the same now, with the same bs stores. A ton of industrial and commercial land has been swallowed for high density retail or residential. Bad for business in the core, where one time it was highly affordable and you could find suitable real estate for business use. Lastly, I miss Maple leaf Village. The good news is after all these years I am finally surrendering the city to the miscreants, the sickos , the commies and the pervs. I am moving to another city thank God and the only thing I will really miss about the current city is the wonderful valley right in the middle of the city. I visit their weekly, used to ride my dirt bike down there as a teenager ( until they commandeered that trail and turned it into a bike path).
Thank you for your thoughtful reply. BTW: I was born at Toronto Western Hospital and learned to skate at 3/4 years old at Maple Leaf Gardens. ;-`) I visited a few years ago and was nearly mugged, were it not for my training, by a Jamaican gang of youths. I don't know that I will ever again go to GTA. :(
I know most of you are filled with Nationalistic pride.
I think that is great.
But there are downsides to everyplace.
For instance, I've read that almost 90% of you all live within 100 miles of the USA border.
So yeah, it gets cold and you have Winter.
What else?
Do you need a supplementary health insurance policy?
Is car insurance mandatory? ( I imagine so) How much? I pay about 25$ a month for liability for 1 car and 35$ for the other.
Is food taxed?
I've seen property taxes are nearly comparable to Wisconsin. (Expensive- 2,0-3,0% mil rates)
Tobacco and booze are way more expensive than here.
Do you pay tax on Internet purchases?
Can you buy stuff easily from the states via the Interwebs?
OK, lots of questions- just curious.
Thanks in advance.
