I've seen it SO many times in my life. Totally normal.
Correct! I was deliverying a truck load of goods to the Walmart Distribution center in Bartlesville, Oklahoma during the winter of 2006 and as i pulled in to unhook my trailer at evening time it suddenly started getting real cold and lighting started popping quickly and then it started sleeting pretty bad and by night fall it was snow blizzard conditions! Took me a good while just to make it to Oktaha, Oklahoma to shut down the truck at a small truck stop there! I will add that well in to the blizzard it was lighting and thundering pretty good! Tht warm and artic jetstreams colliding will do that which usually brings about a winter snow storm!
This phenomenon: colliding air masses typically occurs during spring time when tornadoes generally occur--cold Canadian air meeting warm air masses rising up from the gulf. BTW, Winter storms NEVER, until this year, had names.
Thundersnow, also known as a winter thunderstorm or a thunder snowstorm, is an
extremely rare
kind of thunderstorm with snow falling as the primary precipitation instead of rain. It typically falls in regions of strong upward motion within the cold sector of an extratropical cyclone. Thermodynamically, it is not different from any other type of thunderstorms but the top of the cumulonimbus is usually quite low. As well as snow, graupel, or more rarely hail also commonly falls.
