Original Message "CORTEZ, Colo. - A school board in western Colorado has decided to allow the district superintendent and a principal to carry firearms onto school grounds.

The Cortez Journal reports the seven-member board that oversees schools in Dolores County voted unanimously Wednesday to allow the principal at Dove Creek High School and the superintendent to double as security officers, provided they complete a concealed carry course and receive a permit from the county sheriff's office.

Superintendent Bruce Hankins and Principal Ty Gray will receive an additional $1 salary for the extra duties.

Lance Clem with the Colorado School Safety Resource Center says state law allows peace officers to carry firearms on school grounds, but it doesn't address security officers.

Hankins says security talks were under way before the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut."
