The first shot was fired in the bedroom where Steenkamp and Pistorius had spent the night, according to the account. A spent cartridge case was found on the bedroom floor. Steenkamp then apparently fled to the bathroom and tried to hide behind the door. A further three shots were fired through the door.
"The suspicion is that the first shot, in the bedroom, hit her in the hip. She then ran and locked herself in the toilet. She was doubled-over because of the pain. He fired three more shots. She probably covered her head, which is why the bullet also went through her hand," an unidentified source told the paper.
A timeline of events suggests that neighbors complained of a disturbance at about 1:30 a.m. at Pistorius's house in the exclusive Silver Woods Country Estate east of Pretoria, the country's capital.
At 3:20 a.m., a neighbor called police after hearing shots.
A minute later Pistorius phoned his father, Henke. Henke and Pistorius's sister Aimee reportedly arrived at the house ten minutes later and found Pistorius with Steenkamp in the entrance hall of the house. She was still alive. Paramedics arrived a short while later and tried, without success, for thirty minutes to resuscitate her.
A source "with inside knowledge of the case" told Rapport that Steenkamp's skull had been "crushed", possibly by blows to the back of her head.
