[quote:Anonymous Coward 34714835:MV8yMTQ0NTUyXzM2MjIzNjg1X0M0Q0I0MTlD] [quote:Anonymous Coward 33283057:MV8yMTQ0NTUyXzM2MjIyMjExX0FERDFGMTc1] Special needs students often remove their shoes over and over all day. Principals and school regulations and health laws require the teachers to keep shoes on the children. It is a never-ending struggle, and teacher's aides, who used to handle things like this, are often cut due to budget concerns. The teacher has been instructed to mainstream these children and treat them like everyone else, and keep them in a regular school classroom-type setting, due to the no child left behind philosophy and federal money-per-student policy. If we would make special places for these students to go where shoes are not required, things would go better, but that would violate their individual rights to be treated just like the other students in a school setting. A square peg must be made to fit in a round hole; teachers would be told something like this: Do all your paperwork, and at the same time, deal with sick students and violent students, feed the students twice a day, teach them their abcs and address, how to live in society and go on a bus or to a business. While you're at it, find a way to get the shoes-on compliance 100% of the time, or get fired. signed, special ed 10 years.
Absolute truth. I was an autism teacher for years, and keeping the shoes on is a priority for some reason. These children actually seem to behave better without them, but whatever. I've have parents reccomend fastening the shoes to the ankle, which made me a little concerned. Remember when we had aids for these kids all day, and those poor people had to shadow the kid around all day, and struggle with them to keel putting their shoes on 100 times a day, all while doing the teacher's job. The ta's have it hard. Under appreciated, under paid, and being laid off. What is the big deal here? Why are people threatening violence? You people don't have the slightest clue what you're talking about.
An Indiana couple is looking for answers from their daughter’s former elementary school after the 8-year-old came home from her special-needs program with her shoes duct-taped to her feet and ankles.
